RIOT LADIES (2014) — Amy Poehler, Parker Posey, Maya Rudolph, Mark Ruffalo

At their peak, the seminal riot grrl act Bitch Hazel were the biggest name in female-fronted rock. They headlined multiple tours and festivals in the ’90s and were known for their provocative lyrics and completely badass shows. But after their bassist and manager Jules (Amy Poehler) left the band to go full-time as a talent scout and manager at a major record label, the remaining members — lead singer Maggie (Maya Rudolph) and drummer Cat (Parker Posey) toured briefly but eventually broke up, fading into obscurity. Bitch Hazel, once a powerhouse trio at the front of lady rock, was doomed to become a footnote in the annals of entertainment history, an oft-missed Jeopardy question (“I thought that was Bikini Kill.”).
Cut to the present. Jules’ label is floundering and her personal life is a mess. Maggie is married with two kids in the suburbs; she plays in a neighborhood mom garage band in between PTA meetings. Cat is still a hard-partying alcoholic who owns and manages a Portland bar. They haven’t spoken in years — and they don’t plan to do so, until an old flame of Jules’ comes back into her life with unexpected news. Pete (Mark Ruffalo) was their tour manager and Jules’ longtime boyfriend during their years on the road; he now manages the legendary Seattle recording studio where the band cut their first albums. The studio, which saw the recording of countless demos by young Seattle acts in the ’90s, has been purchased by a development company and is slated for demolition at the end of the month. Pete’s only hope to save the studio is to put together a benefit concert consisting of artists who once cut tracks there — but unless he can bring Kurt Cobain back from the dead, Bitch Hazel is as big an act as he can muster. And if anyone can get the band back together, it’s Jules… though needless to say, it won’t be as easy as it sounds.
